About Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are prestigious awards funded by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). These scholarships are a part of the UK government’s global scholarship program, designed to identify and support outstanding scholars with leadership potential across various fields. Chevening Scholarships offer remarkable opportunities for future leaders to pursue a one-year Master’s degree at the top universities in the UK.

Since its establishment in 1983, Chevening Scholarships have benefited scholars from over 116 countries worldwide, excluding the USA and the EU. This year, approximately 1,500 individuals will receive Chevening Scholarships, contributing to a network of over 46,000 Chevening alums across the globe. In Pakistan, over 1200 individuals have been awarded a Chevening Scholarship, making a significant impact.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (Pakistani citizens are eligible)
  • Commit to returning to their country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after completing the scholarship.
  • Possess an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for entry to a post-graduate program at a UK university, equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK.
  • Have at least two years of work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours)
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and secure an unconditional offer from one of them by July 14, 2022

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

  • Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong)
  • Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country.
  • Are an employee, a relative of an employee, or a former employee (since July 2018) of Her Majesty’s Government, the British Council, a partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities
  • I have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship. Chevening Alumni are not eligible to apply for a further scholarship but may be eligible for a fellowship five years after completing the first award.

Application Documents

Before starting your application, make sure you have the following documents ready:


  • Two references are provided in a letter format in English
  • Valid passport/national ID card
  • University transcripts
  • Three different UK Master’s course choices

Please note that only documents in PDF format can be uploaded, and each document must not exceed 5MB in size.

You can submit your initial application without the optional document and upload it at any point until July 14, 2022. However, suppose you are conditionally selected for a Chevening Scholarship. In that case, you must provide evidence of at least one offer from an eligible course before the deadline to remain in the process.


If you are invited for an interview, you must upload two references to your online application before attending. These references should:

  • Be written in English
  • Be in a letter format, preferably typed, and addressed to the British Embassy or High Commission
  • Be uploaded in PDF format, with each file not exceeding 5MB in size

References should cover:

  • How long you have known the applicant
  • In what capacity do you know the applicant (e.g., professional, educational, supervisory, voluntary, religious)
  • When did you last have regular contact with the applicant?
  • A brief overall endorsement of the applicant, including their skills in leadership and networking, personal, intellectual, and interpersonal qualities, and ability to complete a demanding academic program in the UK.

Work Experience Requirement

Applicants must ensure they meet the minimum of two years of work experience before submitting their Chevening application. Eligible work experience can include full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships. Work experience can be completed before, during, or after graduating from your undergraduate studies, provided it amounts to 2,800 hours.
